SUMMARY:Understanding and Treating Chronic Shame and Self -Loathing
DESCRIPTION:Shame is a phenomena that is in the brain\, the mind\, the body and felt in the relational space between therapist and client. It is no surprise that Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are a risk factor for shame and that shame is pervasive in dissociated clients. Shame is often hidden from others and by its very nature often avoided in treatment. Before chronic shame can be resolved\, the therapist must learn that it has an important function and involves intense physiological activation that often takes the client outside of their window of tolerance. Chronic shame needs to be attenuated\, compassionately understood and put in its proper place. In this workshop\, clinicians will learn a variety of techniques from Sensorimotor Psychotherapy\, Internal Family Systems (IFS)\, EMDR\, trauma sensitive mindfulness\, yoga and guided Imagery to develop improved shame resiliency in their clients.\n \n\n\n\nLearning Objectives:\n\n\n\nAt the conclusion of this workshop\, clinicians will be able to: \n\n\n\nDescribe the neurobiological effects of traumatic experiences and how that results in chronic shame.Be able to apply clinical interventions from Sensorimotor Psychotherapy\, Internal Family Systems (IFS) and trauma sensitive yoga to alleviate shame symptoms in clients.Implement trauma sensitive mindfulness-based techniques to reduce client self-loathing.Build shame resiliency with interventions based on increased empathy\, self-compassion and forgiveness.

SUMMARY:Cracked Up: The Long Arm of Childhood Trauma
DESCRIPTION:Join trauma specialist Dr. Jan Beauregard and other members of the\nNVCP panel for a screening of the movie Cracked Up: The Long Arm of\nChildhood Trauma. Dr. Beauregard\, as well as other members of the panel\nwill be reviewing and discussing research related to the impact of early\nlife adversity on people\, their lives\, their medical history and what\ngoes on in the brain. ACE factors are the single biggest contributor to\nthe risk for psychiatric and medical disorders\, more than any single\ngene of factor. High ACE scores increase the risk for anxiety\,\ndepression\, substance abuse\, heart disease\, stroke and suicide. Learn\nhow to better apply the results from longitudinal studies and how this\ninformation might be utilized for early intervention.

SUMMARY:Making the Connection: Using Body Based Techniques in the Treatment of Addiction and Trauma
DESCRIPTION:Making the Connection:\nUsing Body Based Techniques in the Treatment of Addiction and Trauma \nClinicians often find clinical progress stymied by the persistent affect regulation difficulties experienced by clients who have multiple addictions along with underlying trauma and dissociation. Experiential activities which support our current understanding of the neurobiology of trauma united with the emergent field of body-based therapies will be introduced for more integrative healing. Through lecture and experiential exercises this workshop will teach participants how to disrupt maladaptive behavioral patterns by using techniques from Sensorimotor Psychotherapy™\, guided imagery\, trauma informed mindfulness and trauma sensitive yoga. Clinicians will be able to model and teach clients mind/body techniques and practices to help them break the habitual\, reactive\, and dissociative responses they often rely on for managing intense emotions. Even the most dysregulated client will be able to incorporate some of these new patterns and increase their “window of tolerance” for modulating unpleasant affect thereby reducing both dissociation and relapse. \nWorkshop Objectives: \nAt the conclusion of this workshop participants will be able to: \n1. identify and use treatment methods that address co-addictions using a trauma informed approach. \n2. install somatic anchors and resources in trauma clients to increase their ability to modulate unpleasant affect and shame which often triggers relapse. \n3. conduct simple Sensorimotor™ experiments to assist clients in identification of embodied resource ego states in order to modulate unpleasant affect. \n4. be able to guide clients in developing greater body awareness and enhance regulatory capacities through “trauma sensitive” yoga and trauma informed mindfulness techniques.

SUMMARY:Working With The Highly Dissociative Client : Assessment\, Staging Treatment and Fostering Integration
DESCRIPTION:For our clinical population presenting with higher levels of dissociation and complex trauma\, parts stuck in the traumatic past often have difficulties making reflective rather than reflexive decisions as they battle both internal and external pressures from different self states. In this workshop\, clinicians will learn about the DES and MID assessment tools to use in conjunction with the SDI and PTSI to better guide case conceptualization and treatment. Integration of the personality is not simply the unification of parts but is the bedrock of functioning which organizes both our body and mind as well as our patterns of social engagement to each other. Using the theory of structural dissociation of the personality and various techniques from EMDR\, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy™\, Ego State Therapy and guided imagery\, clinicians will be able to better assist their clients towards a higher level of personality integration thereby reducing defensive patterns and action tendencies (fight\, flight\, freeze) which often lead to rapid switching\, poor decision making and habitual self-harming relapse patterns. \nObjectives: \nAt the conclusion of this workshop participants will be able to: \n  \n\norganize and stage treatment so that clients work within their “window of tolerance” for managing unpleasant affect and dissociative tendencies.\nutilize the DES and MID as diagnostic tools to screen and assess for levels of dissociation.\nBe able to disrupt maladaptive action tendencies in their clients through use of mapping techniques and anchoring of resource parts.\n\n

SUMMARY:Making the Connection: Using Body-based Techniques in the Treatment of Addiction and Trauma
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Description: \nRecent research on the treatment of chronically traumatized individuals has awakened practitioners in the mental health and addiction fields to examine the complex interactions between addictive disorders and trauma related treatment challenges. Whether the addiction is to substances or is a process addiction like compulsive sexuality\, it impacts and alters the brain. The addictive behavior serves as a maladaptive strategy for affect regulation for clients who have limited coping strategies as well as limited abilities to form healthy attachments. In this workshop we will look at addiction as both a brain disease and an attachment disorder and explore the impact of this compensatory survival strategy on the clients ability to self regulate in a safe manner. Principles of stage oriented trauma treatment will be highlighted along with newer body based treatments like Sensorimotor Psychotherapy ™ and trauma sensitive yoga as effective treatment strategies that promote the integrative capacities and empowerment of clients. \nLearning Objectives: \n• Utilize the DSM 5 diagnostic criteria for addictive disorders and other assessment tools to support the evaluation and treatment planning for clients who present with co-occurring\, trauma related disorders. \n• Design several somatically based experiments to assist clients with affect regulation and boundary setting.- \n• Design five creative treatment strategies using trauma sensitive yoga techniques to support individuals in safely regulating arousal level and modulating unpleasant affect. \n  \nTo Register go to ISSTD:    http://www.isstd.org

SUMMARY:It's Not About the Story: Using Art\, Yoga and the Body in Trauma Treatment - Part I
DESCRIPTION:Update your clinical skills by incorporating what we have learned from brain science and research supporting yoga\, movement and expressive therapies. In this experientially focused workshop\, participants will gain a theoretical overview of the best practices of body-centered trauma treatment while participating in experiential exercises designed to integrate these innovative\, multi-sensory techniques into clinical work. \nTraditional talk therapy is often not enough when treating trauma. The newer\, experiential approaches to trauma treatment integrate the use of image\, body sensation and action.  By entering the world of the trauma client from the “bottom up” (starting with the body rather than the mind) we may better assist our clients in finding inner strengths and resources and more successfully facilitate trauma processing.  By using body based and expressive therapies\, we teach our clients how to orient themselves in different ways\, enhancing both the intensity and effectiveness of therapy. \nThe facilitators will share – through experiential activities and demonstration – a range of creative\, body-centered trauma treatment tools taken from years of successful professional practice and underpinned by the latest neurobiology and attachment research.  Issues to be addressed in the workshop include: the  neurobiology of trauma and why experiential therapies are a treatment of choice; phase oriented treatment; establishing psychological safety; managing affect dysregulation; working within a “window of tolerance”\, creating boundaries and containers and incorporating non-verbal techniques for processing trauma. \nNo previous training in art or yoga are required to learn the techniques presented. Please wear clothing that allows you to move and be comfortable stepping into the various activities planned for this day. Yoga mats are not necessary. At the conclusion of this workshop participants will be able to: \n\nUnderstand the current neuroscience research on trauma and the brain and apply it to the treatment of their clients.\nAcquire a range of simple\, experiential techniques and tools that can be used in clinical practice with traumatized clients.\nBe able to use trauma sensitive yoga techniques to teach clients body based ways of grounding and managing unpleasant affect.\n\nWith facilitators Jan Beauregard and Tally Tripp. Cost: $159.00 including coffee. light refreshments and art supplies. \nThe Integrative Psychotherapy Institute is an NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEPTM) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. SUMMARY:Don't Tear Your Hair Out: We Can Manage Suicidality\, Homicidality and Self-Injurious Behaviors
DESCRIPTION:Presenters:\n\nJoan A Turkus\, MD\, DLFAPA\nPhilip J Kinsler\, PhD\, ABPP\nJan Beauregard\, PhD\, CSAC\, CSAT\n\nDescription:\nSuicidality\, homicidality\, and self-injurious behaviors are both common and disturbing symptoms of complex trauma and dissociative disorders as well as challenging for clinicians to manage. These chronically unsafe and challenging behaviors grind away at our patience and clinical self-confidence\, often resulting in our feeling powerless and deskilled. Yet at the same time\, a trauma survivor can say\, “Suicide saved my life.” How do we reconcile this? \nThere is a body of knowledge about suicidality\, homicidality\, and self-injurious behaviors. This conference will discuss the assessment and the major traumagenic dynamics of suicidality\, homicidality\, self-injury\, substance use and eating disorders\, all of which are such familiar syndromes in our work. We will explore the varied meanings that arise within our clients and which drive these behaviors and look at successful therapeutic interventions within a trauma/dissociation framework for each of them to increase our clinical acumen and skill-sets. \nFinally\, we will address our own countertransference and vicarious traumatization. We will explore professional and personal strategies for us as clinicians. \nObjectives: At the end of the presentation\, a participant will be able to: \n\nDescribe the internal meaning systems that can lead to suicidal and/or other self-destructive behaviors.\nPrepare interventions to aid clients in managing these behaviors.\nDesign a variety of self-care strategies to avoid vicarious traumatization and burnout.\n\nReferences:\n\nBrand\, B.
